Froothie — A Fructose Removed Fruit Smoothie
Hanna Brosky, Dana Waxenberg, John Lim
Take a quick trip to almost any restaurants or convenience stores and you’ll find an isle dedicated to “healthy” fruit juices and drinks. What most people don’t know, however, is that those “no sugar added” and “100% pure and natural” tags hide the fact that there are inherent natural sugars in the fruits. While other nutrients in fruits, such as vitamins and other minerals, are healthy and necessary, the “hidden” sugars can pose a problem if consumed excessively, and in a diabetic’s case, life threatening. After interviewing both type one and type two diabetics of different ages, genders, and backgrounds, we reached a consensus—diabetics are choosing not to consume fruits due to its sugar and are missing out on some of the nutrients from them. And diabetics aren’t just a minority, as over 29.1 million Americans suffer from diabetes and approximately 86 million more are considered pre-diabetics.
Enter Froothie, a fructose-removed fruit smoothie. Our team is attempting to change the beverage industry by providing a completely honest and specialized fruit smoothie that currently does not exist anywhere else in the world. Using an innovative method, we are working to separate and remove the fructose from the smoothie while keeping its valuable nutrients and taste. The mostly sugar free smoothie will attract not only diabetics and pre-diabetics, but it will also attract people seeking a healthier way to consume fruit and those generally seeking for low-carbohydrates diet. While we are planning to start locally, we hope to venture out eventually and infiltrate the beverage industry to reach the millions of diabetics across the country. By exposing the consequences of mindless consumption of sugar, we are attempting to prove that sugar does not always mean sweet.
